BOADEN’s Memoirs
William & Betty Orchard … she
was the daughter of old Tome Cooke who came down a young man from North Devon as
a wheel-wright to Trelowarren, she had three brothers, Ned, John Tom, all fond of drink & all
carpenters, and 3 sisters, one married to Allen at Traboe, another to a
Pentecost in St Keverne, and the other, the youngest, Jane to a Trelowarren
servant called Green, I think 2 of her sons and one daughter still survives.

b. 17 Apr 1864 Skyburriowe, Con, Early in 1871 an event occurred which was the first real
trouble of my life, my dear little Edward now approaching 7 years of age, a
fine forward little fellow who had sometimes led a horse to be shod, fine
head, bright countenance and finely developed body, was taken poorly, we
could not discover what was the matter, he did not appear to be ill, we did
not take particular care of him, after some time we discovered his face was
sinking, sent for the young Wearne, (Dr Wearne Snr, had died just before) he
pronounced it dropsy after scarletina, and that his state was a very
dangerous one, he grew rather worse but was downstairs a day or two before he
died, then I felt the bitterness of bereavement, he died February 9th
1871. From “Life and Times…” John

The following is the text of a letter he [William] wrote to his daughter
and son-in-law (called Orchard?) who had emigrated to southern
"Gwinear 2nd April 1850
Dear Son and Daughter,
I once more write you hoping each of you and children have arrived safe
to the intended country where you are enjoying health and happiness. I hope the
country will give you satisfaction and remunerate you for all the trouble in
getting to it. We are all at present enjoying health thank God for it.
Your brother William's wedding took place the
28th of last month the day before Good Friday. He is about to live at
Leedstown. He intend to stop with William Harvey a
small time while the house is getting in order for him." (This William Blewett was my grandfather whom I knew
and who died when I was about seven years old. The woman he married was
Elizabeth Rodda whom he had met in
"Tamsen Ward intended to be married on the Thursday but
unfortunately cousin Grace had child the same day they intended to be married.
Tamsen is still out of employ, they are going to live with John Symonds. The
times in this country is very much improved since you left indeed a plenty of
work for such as carriers masons and miners, there is not half enough workers
for the work. I have some work to do for the carriers. I have made enquiry
after such several miles around and cannot get anyone to do it. Such a thing I
do not remember before." (It is not possible
to discover from this statement what his occupation was. I should guess, a
blacksmith - but see later)
"Our country is full of life about mining Leedstown is in the midst
of it. There is a engine house building on Wheal Unity
old mine I understand with a good company the one about to work with all speed,
also there is a company about to work the Wheal Treasury immediately. A great
part of the old Godolphin Mine is about to work. They have made a beginning to
work it. If it re-opened the company is good. We have made a beginning to work
North Wheal Vor mine with I believe a good company of Adventurers and expect to
have steam engine working shortly. Wheal Carpenter is looking kindly at
present." (I was born 31 years after this was
written, by which time all the mining glory had departed. Not an engine house
or even rusted machinery - just a wilderness of bare mine dumps, 'burras' we
call them. The word 'wheal' is the Celtic 'huel' = a mine workings, the word
'shareholders' was not used; they were 'adventurers'.)
"I have some shares to upwards of one hundred pounds and likely to
sell more shares to same amount of money and afterwards keep a large interest
in the mine. I intend to make all the money I can in the way of selling while
there is a chance for it. I hope it will be a good thing for me in my old years
if I should live to be old." (How did he
succeed in his money making? Before me on the table ie a probate parchment
issued by the Archdeacon of
"We had a meeting on Wheal Carpenter a few days since at Leedstown attended with very respectable men, a great many from the neighbourhood of Camborne. One of the party a parson.
Mr Osborne have given up the farm, it is the next to one Mr. Mildren,
brother to Mr. Mildren the sawyer. Mr W. Hamlyn of Tregotha have
let his farm to Mr. John Eva so now he has the whole of the farm. Captain
Delbridge is gone to live in the farm house and keep a dairy, I believe from
ten to twelve cows."
(The manager of a mine was always called a Captain
- with a capital C)
"Mr. Eva is very proud indeed I think to have the whole of Tregotha
farm. Mr W. Hamlyn is about to leave the country shortly design for Port
Phillip, not far from you. I believe he have a sister in the same place." (Port Phillip, is I think, modern Melbourne - the
Orchards must have gone there first and moved to the Adelaide district after -
probably Moonta, a great copper Mining camp where the Cornish swarmed. Now derelict.)
"Mr. W. Osborne was saying some time since about going to Port
Natal. I believe the thing is allmost (sic) gone dead I do not put much on it.
Your brother still work at Wheal Carpenter with
Johnston Thomas and Alexander Gundry."("Your
brother" suggests there was only one brother or he would have named him.
If this is so, then "your brother" was Edward Blewett, afterwards a
Mining Engineer, your grandfather.)
"The little Mary Blewett Shugg have been with us several months. She have tongue enough for all in the house. She went home some time since, we meant for her to stop home. The very first night going to bed with the candle caught the bed hangings on fire burnt the whole of them and several things else being a thatch house and, unfortunately it proved to be a hole in the sealing (sic) which the fire went through being a quantity of old reed on the sealing (sic) it took fire, the house was all but burnt. If it wasn't being for William Harvey the innkeeper being a fear nothing man with a shovel with him to cut down the sealing the house must be burnt. I and mother proved to be there at the time. The windows were smashed and broke in pieces, a great many things singed, a loss to J. S. several pounds. In the midst of it mother fainted which cost me sixpence in gin to get her to her feet again so little Mary have been with us ever since."
(In the pedigree chart at the end of this
transcript I will place "little Mary Blewett Shugg". Her mother was
Elizabeth Blewett, daughter of the letter-writer, who married a Captain Shugg.
My father took me to their thatched house at Fraddam, a village in Gwinear
parish, several times to tea. He always called her Aunt Betsy. The inn is
opposite the thatched house. "J S" may be Captain Shugg. The story of
"mother" and the gin is slightly obscure. I never knew "little
Mary Blewett Shugg" unless she was a slightly dwarfish person I called
"Aunt Martha" who lived with Aunt Betsy Shugg. In every generation
since, The Blewetts have produced one or more chatterboxes - mostly women. My
father's sister Mary Blewett was one and my sister Gertrude is another. I don't
think I could be described as a "strong silent man!")
"On Good Friday last the place called No Mans Land took fire burnt
every house in the place except one being a house covered with slate, the poor
old Henry Trevaskus sustain a loss of the whole of his houses. The time the houses was burning the daughter of the old man was praying
to the Lord to stop the fire. The old man was in a rage blaspheming betwixt the
both, the houses was burnt.
James Shugg still working at Wheal Treasury where they had a grand
discovery in the mine to the west of the portion called Wheal Margaret which
have been a great support to the mine but at present it is very poor." (Wheal Treasury is close to Leedstown in the parish of
Crowan but close to Gwinear border. To-day it is a ten to twenty acres of
mining waste land. On November 25, 1881 I was born in a cottage on the borders
of Wheal Treasury)
"Mr R.R. Mitchell and his wife went to London together a short time
since, while in London Missus Mitchell died with the typhus fever the corpse
was brought into Hayle by the Cornwall steamer from there conveyed to Marazion
and there interred.
I received your letter this day while writing to you and we are all glad
to hear you are all well. I hope each of you will continue as such the
remainder part of your passage. You mention you might have the opportunity to
write us again shortly we shall be very glad to hear from you again shortly
specially to find you are all still well at the time you write. I could make
out your letter very well I think it was done excellent in such shortness of
time and such hurry skurry as you must be in.
Respecting the weather this month we have had a great deal of cold and
wet as I ever remembered at the time, last month the weather was very fine
indeed the farmers is very much behind with their work in consequence of so
much wet. This letter have been delayed in consequence
of not having the directions it is now Sunday 12th May we are still in grand
health.
As I have mention last Sunday was the Feasten Day. James Shugg and
William and his wife and Uncle John Carah took dinner with us our house having
been repaired against this tide, the look of it being much improved indeed the
