COOKE of Mawgan-in-Meneage

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This tree is provided to family historians without prejudice. I have constructed most of my family trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases it is estimated as the best fit from available choices. In this tree, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in this family. More modern families also need your inputs, because as I can link modern families to each other, and thus it enables a focus on their common ancestry. The memories of one branch may not be complete, but yet may fill in gaps of another branch. Only by a concerted effort can we really define the true lineage. Help me to help you by sharing what you have.

ABBREVIATIONS USED

Other than the standard abbreviations and Chapman County codes I also use

(OPR) to designate that I personally read the registers on microfilm.

(OPR-##) to designate that a correspondent with initials "##" read the registers on microfilm.

(IGI reg) to designate source of IGI materials with "registers" source codes

(IGI) to show IGI materials with another source (not always reliable)

"c" before year date to show an estimated year

"cc" before year date to show I have used the spouse's date data as a rough guide

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Shared research from Jenny KISLER < jenny_kisler-at-ekit.com > (note change -at- to @ before emailing) who provided many details.

Many additions also from Ron REED < reedfamilytree-at-comcast.net > (note change -at- to @ before emailing)
The discovery of the Hartland origins was done by Patricia SMITH <smithpr2-at-bigpond.net.au> supported by the John Boaden Memoirs

I have used the COOKE’s of Hartland family tree sketched out by Jenny KISLER and expanded where possible to detail the origins of this family.

John BOADEN’s Memoirs

William & Betty Orchard … she was the daughter of old Tome Cooke who came down a young man from North Devon as a wheel-wright to Trelowarren, she had three brothers, Ned, John  Tom, all fond of drink & all carpenters, and 3 sisters, one married to Allen at Traboe, another to a Pentecost in St Keverne, and the other, the youngest, Jane to a Trelowarren servant called Green, I think 2 of her sons and one daughter still survives.

Subject: Concerning John Cook & Isot Juel
Hello there...I came upon your website quite by accident...in looking for information on my Cook line from Hartland Devon, I saw that you have John Cook & Isot Juel...I too have these people in my line...(not confirmed)...but I have that John Cook was a son of John Cook & Alice Buckler (???)...and John Cook (the younger), had a brother Nicholas born 1685 in Hartland.
I have a William Charles Cook born about 1824 in Hartland, son of Robert Cook & Grace Colwell...William married firstly Elizabeth Braund, when she died in about 1866, William then married a Hannah Evans, daughter of John Evans & Grace Bray...
Going back a bit...this is the lineage that I have for William Charles Cook....
Thomas Cook...about 1599
    wife Katherine Spoure...about 1603
        Thomas Cook...about 1625
            wife Martha (unknown)...about 1625
                Thomas Cook...about 1649
                    Elizabeth Clark...about 1653
                        Robert Cook...about 1687
                            wife Mary Cruse
                                Thomas Cook...about 1711
                                    wife Anne Jeffery...about 1717
                                        John Cook...about 1757
                                            wife Mary Cloke (or Cloak)...about 1759
                                                Robert Cook...about 1795
                                                    wife Grace Colwell...1798
                                                        William Charles Cook...about 1734 (although his gravemarker

 says 1824)
                wife 1 Elizabeth Braund...about 1835
                    wife 2 Hannah Evans...about 1846
