===============================================================

This tree is provided to family historians without prejudice. I have constructed most of my family trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases it is estimated as the best fit from available choices.  In this tree, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in this family. If it your line, do not accept what I have as confirmed - check it yourself against the original records to personally confirm your own heritage. More modern families also need your inputs, because as I can link modern families to each other, and thus it enables a focus on their common ancestry. The memories of one branch may not be complete, but yet may fill in gaps of another branch. Only by a concerted effort can we really define the true lineage. Help me to help you by sharing what you have.   Ken STEWART < kjstew@iinet.net.au > 23 Mar 2003 - 2015

Special thanks to my fellow Australian WILLIAMS researchers Mary WILLIAMS and Jenny MCNAMARA

ABBREVIATIONS USED

Other than the standard abbreviations and Chapman County codes I also use

(IGI reg) to designate source of IGI materials with "registers" source codes

(IGI) to show IGI materials with another source (not always reliable)

"c" before year date to show an estimated year

"cc" before year date to show I have used the spouse's date data as a rough guide

WILLIAMS Thomas & Mary (57k)

South Australian Register, Monday 11 Jun 1888 - Marriages

"WILLIAMS - WATCHMAN - On the 9th March, at St. Michael's Church, Mitcham, by licence, by the Rev. Henry Read, M.A., Mr. Thomas Williams, of Caltowie, to Jane, daughter of the late Mr. Stephen Watchman, of Coromandel Valley."

Mary Jane WATCHMAN by Jenny MCNAMARA (7 Aug 2011)

Most researchers believe Mary Jane Watchman was born Mary Jane Bell on 7 March 1853 at Brownhill Creek, South Australia.  Note:  this date does not match the ages recorded on her son Isaac's birth certificate or on her death indicate, which indicate she was born between 18 Dec 1853 and 9 Mar 1854, however I have been unable to find a birth record for these dates.  I have also been unable to find any other records of her possible birth date and the cemetery where she is buried did not have a record of it either.  Nor can my grandmother remember her birthday or birth month

The Adelaide Advertiser - Monday 26 August 1929

"EIGHTY YEARS OLD.  MRS. BREALEY, OF CHERRY GARDENS.  Mrs. J.B. Brealey, a resident of Cherry Gardens, where she has lived more than 52 years, celebrated her 80th birthday last Wednesday.  She was born at Cornwall, and at the age of three came to South Australia in the ship Ramillies with her father, step-mother, brothers and sisters. Soon after their arrival her father, Mr. Williams, took up land near the present National Park. She attended the Mitcham school, and well remembers being scared by the blacks, who frequented the hills at that time, shaking their waddies at the children on their way to and from school. The family moved to Coromandel Valley, where Mrs. Brealey lived until a few years after her marriage to Mr. J. B. Brealey in 1871, when they went to Cherry Gardens. There were nine children, seven of whom survive, and they were present at the birthday gathering with the exception of the youngest son, Mr. F. Brealey, of Port Augusta. The eldest son (Mr. J. W. Brealey), with his wife and three children, journeyed from Western Australia to be present. Two sons and two grandsons enlisted for active service abroad during the Great War; one son and one grandson lost their lives. Mrs. Brealey has 28 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She has four brothers and one sister:—Mr. John Williams, who passed his 90th birthday in October; Mrs. W. Broadbear, of Victoria, 86; Mr. Charlie Williams, 84; and Mr. Tom Williams. 82, both of Queensland. Mrs Brealey is still active, and loves to work in her garden and poultry yards."

SOME FAMILY HISTORY NOTES

Robert Victor WILLIAM’s history… (Charles’s youngest child)

(sent to me by Mary WILLIAMS < marywill@optusnet.com.au > - June 2009)

My father, Charles Williams, and his brother Thomas were born in Cornwall, England. They made the decision to come out to Australia and arrived at Adelaide to join the settlement of South Australia. Dad and his brother were corn farmers and took up land near Kapunda to grow wheat as this crop was doing well in South Australia and much needed in the settlement.

My Father and Mother (Margaret Wilson) were married at Wilmington S.A. (1885).

The land my father had proved to be on the dry side of the rain belt and hard work could not make it a success. They decided to go across to the more fertile East coast to Langothlin in NSW. and tried potato farming. During this time three children were born –

Florence Myrtle WILLIAMS    1886

Ralph Thomas WILLIAMS      1888

Stanley Charles WILLIAMS    1891

My father and his brother stayed together on the land all this time. Queensland was opening up for settlement and my father and his brother decided to move up to Bundaberg and the whole family made the long journey. In Bundaberg my brother Frank was born in 1900 and I was born in 1903.

My sister, Florence, the eldest of the family of five, died here with pneumonia, aged 10 yrs.

The family stayed in Bundaberg a few years, the brothers working in the timber industry. They heard of the Atherton Tableland and the timber growing there and we all made another long journey up to Atherton. I started school at Atherton aged 5 years.

While there my Dad heard of land available near Rockhampton so decided to apply. We came down in the "Bombala" the ship doing the coastal trade. He made application and was successful in getting two blocks of land (640 acres) of maiden scrub. We were the first while settlers.  The council had sunk several wells for water, there being no surface water. We lived in tents here until my father and my elder brothers could clear the land and build a home. This we called "Hawk's Nest". The district was known as Barmoya and was approximately 35 miles from Rockhampton. In those days the only way of getting from our property to Rockhampton by horse-drawn vehicle.

By this time a school had been built. My brother Frank and I rode a pony about 1 1/2 miles daily, to and from. I had to leave school at 14 to work on the farm. There was much to he done and we worked very hard on the farm. Later we built a tennis court near the house and there were tennis parties round the district. Other people had taken up land and we all relied on our neighbours.

Even so, the prices of everything we produced were very low and so we decided to break up the party. My mother and father bought a home in Rockhampton and lived in Kent Street. My eldest brother Ralph wanted to stay on the farm, so Stanley, Frank and I decided to try our luck elsewhere. We all lived at our parent’s home in Kent St.

At this time the Rockhampton water supply reservoir on the Fitzroy River at Yaamba are under construction and I got a job there. My second eldest brother Stanley got a job in Rockhampton in a Carrying Service. After a delivery to Kabra and, in making a minor adjustment, his hand was caught up in an exposed fly-wheel. His hand was so badly crushed he had to have it amputated. When his hand healed he applied for the Rockhampton Mail Delivery. This meant meeting all trains, collecting inward and outward mail bags also collecting street letter box mail. He was unable to do this job on his own so we three brothers got together. We ran the Royal Mail Service for some years. We also had the Applegarth bus service. Also, we had the delivery contract for James Stewart and Sons, Rockhampton’s main Department Store.

Some years later Stan built the service station at the corner of Kent and Denham streets, with the tennis court at the back which was hired out. By this time cars were becoming more prevalent and petrol was needed.

In 1930 I married Doris Milne, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Milne of Gracemere. Her father George Alexander had emigrated from Aberdeen in Scotland at the end of the 19th century. He had had formal training and a good knowledge of machinery. He had helped set up and looked after Nutall's Butter Factory in Rockhampton. Later he went to work for Archer Bros. who had a big pastoral property at Gracemere near Rockhampton, looking after all their machinery etc. He married Annie Thorsen, whose parents had emigrated from Denmark and who had land at Gracemere. He worked at Archer Bros. all his life.

My brother Frank had now married also and we decided to go our own ways.

I went back to the land, buying a farm at Dalma outside Rockhampton. Our first daughter, Betty Isabell, was born in 1931.This was the height of the Great Depression and even though we worked hard we could not sell anything we produced on the farm. This proved to be a failure. Through a friend of my mother's I gained employment in the State Forestry at Gympie so I took it as jobs were very scarce and. unemployment everywhere. Our second daughter, June Margaret, was born in Gympie in 1938.

About 1940/1941 we decided to return to Rockhampton which we felt was our home. At this time the threat of the Japanese invasion was very real and people in Rockhampton were nervous during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Rockhampton was full of American soldiers.

My father had, died in 1933. My brother Stanley and his family took over the Kent Street home and my mother bought a home, in Derby Street.

On returning to Rockhampton I took a job with Rickarts Bakery. They were working round the clock making bread and cakes to feed the 40,000 odd American troops. This was pretty near the population of Rockhampton over again. I ran their delivery section. Not only did we have the deliveries to the troops, there was bread delivered all over Rockhampton. Also Rockhampton was the railhead for the West and those days a big quantity of bread and cakes etc. went each day by rail out West, some as far as Longreach.

Also, Stan had a taxi service now too and I drove taxis some weekends. After the Americans had gone and trade got back to normal I took a job with Byrne Motors. Part of my work with them was flying down to Brisbane and driving up the new cars from the Ford Motor Company.

Doris and I decided to break up our home in Rockhampton and move to Brisbane. 'We bought our home at 8 Currong Street, Kenmore. I worked with Metropolitan Motors for a couple of years before retiring. The rest you know.

I must, add that only once during my Mother's life did she ever return to South Australia and to her family. My mother and I went by ship from Rockhampton to Adelaide. This was a long journey by sea those days, especially when the return trip had to be undertaken by ship also. I was a small child when I accompanied her on this trip, and it was a major undertaking both in time and distance and by ship was the only way. My mother spent her life a long way from her family and relatives and had to withstand hardships and isolation, especially during the first half of her life.  She had to bring up a family and create a home under real pioneering circumstances.

Such was Australia in those days of settlement and creating a life.

MORE FAMILY HISTORY NOTES

CHADBONES - Doris Vera (Vera) WILLIAMS m/to Joseph Henry (Joe) CHADBONE

(sent to me by Caroline HAMILTON [centenaryhistory-at-hotmail.com] Oct 2009

I remember Joe Chadbone coming to Brisbane with the Williams brothers and driving back to Rockhampton with the new cars - Joe would call in to say hello to my mother at Kedron as we lived just 3 houses in from the main road near the Lutwyche Cemetery at Kedron.  Joe came with them as company for the long drive back to Rocky.

Joe and Vera always came down for the Brisbane for the RNA and stayed at a motel just outside the front gates.  This meant they did not have far to walk to enter and attended every day. Vera usually went to MacDonald and East, in George Street to purchase some new clothes for herself (she was a large woman).  Uncle Joe used to tease me about the monkeys in side show alley when I was very young and I used to call him 'the monkey man'.

Charlie Williams (lived in McColl Street, North Rockhampton - son of one of the brothers in your story above, I believe) (likely Charles Mervyn WILLIAMS s/o Stanley WILLIAMS – from Mary WILLIAMS) and his wife were also known to me - Joe would collect the left over bread from the bakery and vegetable scraps from the fruit shop near his home and Charlie came to collect it at the weekend for the animals.  There was a lane behind their house and every Sunday Charlie would arrive to collect the bags of food.  Charlie was very close to Joe and Vera and looked after them in their later years.
