I have constructed most of my family trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases it is estimated as the best fit from available choices. In this tree, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in this family. The DUNSTONE family

It may be the problem of incomplete data from missing or untranscribed parishes that shows large gaps in parishes for DUNSTONE families.

For some parishes the Parish Clerk has lots of data on their own website, and this has also been transferred to the OPC database. But the registers are not always completely transcribed. An example is the Mawgan-in-Meneage site. Blue is, Black is not yet available.

So the analysis which follows must be tempered with that background possibility of register gaps.

In early registers time – before 1575 – DUNSTONE families were visible in baptisms, marriages and burials (BMDs) in just two parishes, Mawgan-in-Menage in the south and St Columb Minor in the central west of Cornwall (totalling 14 entries). After 1575 these parishes both declined in entries, and both ceased altogether by 1620, but Mawgan re-emerged after 1750 – even though the Mawgan Registers were fully transcribed for those intervening 150 years.

From 1575 – 1620, two new nearby districts emerged as the centres for the family. The St Columb family appeared to move to Wendron (32 entries) and possibly to St Enoder (17 entries), however the St Enoder family had died out by 1600. The Mawgan family may also have joined the main group in Wendron.

The family records were now mainly centred around the Wendron Parish. This is confirmed for the next 80 years, 1621 – 1700, when 147 entries appear in Wendron, 23 in Stithians and 11 in adjacent Perranarworthal both near Falmouth, and for the rest of Cornwall there are 27 strays in various parishes in the South of the county.

After 1700, there are smatterings of families moving out from the main population in Wendron into various other parishes, forming splinter groups.

By 1881, the British Surname Atlas shows that the distribution of the DUNSTONE family is essentially a Cornish family around Truro (1881 census) with the expected few families spread into the rest of England.

CONCLUSION: The Dunstone family in Cornwall had its origins in these particular districts of Southern Cornwall.

Richard DUNSTONE of St Columb Minor took his family to Wendron in 1574. This became the large family in that southern Cornwall area. These are my ROGERS - DUNSTONE family origins

The Stithians and Perranarworthal families expanded into Feock, Kea, Gwennap, St Gluvias, Mawnan others nearby, during the subsequent centuries.
