About my KITTO files

These trees are provided to family historians without prejudice. I have constructed most of my KITTO family trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases it is estimated as the best fit from available choices. In most of the trees, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in this family. More modern families also need your inputs, because as I can link modern families to each other, and thus it enables a focus on their common ancestry. The memories of one branch may not be complete, but yet may fill in gaps of another branch. Only by a concerted effort can we really define the true lineage. Help me to help you by sharing what you have.

ABBREVIATIONS USED

Other than the standard abbreviations and Chapman County codes I also use

b. born, bp. baptised, m. married, d. died, bd. buried, cr. cremated

(IGI reg) to designate source of IGI materials with "registers" source codes

(IGI) or (IGI patron) to show IGI materials with another source (not always reliable)

Other sources may be abbreviated, hoping you are able to understand my intention.

"c" before year date to show an estimated year

"cc" before year date to show I have used the spouse's date data as a rough guide

The (Qx 18xx #5c/xxx St Columb) details are the GRO reference numbers for certificates. These are as follows (Quarter, Year, County code, Ref number, County District)

PRIVACY

For the sake of privacy, I do not put the full dates of birth, death or marriage of any known living person. For unknown individuals I allow 100 years from a known data of birth.

Addresses are usually not published for recent census or Internet Locations, unless I had found a different more recent location.

Full dates and addresses are kept in my private files, available to immediate family members for their genealogical studies.

Mary's marriage portion was £ 200 and a moity of the mansion and grounds of Browda constituted her jointure. John KITTOW (c1670) appears to have died early leaving a young family with their mother to the care of his brother-in-law, Thomas CONGDON, who faithfully carried out the trust.  The latter married somewhat late in life to Joane BUDGE, who predeceased him childless. He died in 1748, leaving the bulk of his property to John KITTOW's children.

The West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser,

Monday, 10 Jan 1887

Extracted by Rita Bone Kopp & Julia Mossman OPC's for St Stephen in Brannel & St Austell

Mr. KITTOW - The death of my old friend, Mr. Kittow, of Browda, at the genuinely patriarchal age of 100 years, which he had just overpassed, I believe, by a few days, recalls all the memories of the ancient glories of South Caradon, throughout the whole of the prosperous existence of which mine he was either actually, or, I might almost say, practically -- seeing that he was aided and succeeded by his nephew, Mr. J. G. DYMOND -- the purser. It was about the year 1835 that one party after another began to drive levels into the Caradon hills, tempted by the fine gossans, at the spot which has since become known as South Caradon. They made nothing of it, however, and at length in 1837 a new party took the matter up, at first, like their predecessors, to be disappointed, but at length to find that it was only 'the strike of a pick' that came between them and fortune. The leaders of this lucky band of adventurers were Messrs. T. and R. Kittow, Mr. J. CLYMO, and Mr. P. Clymo, Jun. It was, then, just 50 years ago, when he had well reached middle life, and when some people think of dropping the more active forms of business, that Mr. Kittow commenced his prosperous mining career. Practically he saw the rise and development of the copper mining industry of the Caradons, and its decline and fall; for, so far as I am aware, there are only two mines now in operation in the locality which were at work before this date, and one of these has turned over to the majority, namely, Stowes, now part of Phoenix sett, and largely productive of tin. The other is that perennially working, and called Marke Valley, which may be the last of the Cornish mines left, for all I know – it jogs along with such an even tenor, neither baffled by serious disappointment, nor perplexed by deserved success. Mr. Kittow was a man who worked long and well, and earned respect, and even at 100 one is sorry to part with him, though age be at last a burden.

Funeral of a Cornish Centenarian -

The funeral of Mr. Thomas KITTOW, of Browda, Linkinhorne, who died on the last day of the old year, aged 100, took place on Thursday. The weather was cold, with showers of snow and rain, and as Browda can only be reached by a long drive, the attendance was not so large as it might otherwise have been. However, a very long string of carriages of various descriptions and a considerable cavalcade of horsemen followed the hearse from the house to Linkinhorne Church, where the burial service was performed by the vicar (Rev. H.W. POLAND) and the assistant-curate (the Rev. FIRTH).
The first coaches contained Mr. E.P. Kittow, Patreida (nephew); Richard Kittow, Tredaule; and John Kittow, Stokeclimsland (grand-nephew); Messrs. T.K. DYMOND, Southampton; J. Dymond, jun., Devonport; J. PETER (Peter and Marsack), and Dr. MOLE, Callington; Edward NICHOLLS, Plymouth and Callington; M. TREHANE, Stockaton, Southhill; J.H. TREHANE, Stockaton and Plymouth; J.H. DINGLE, Darley and Linkinhorne; Mark GUY, Bodmin; G.G. WHITE and J. PETHYBRIDGE, Launceston; Lewis FOSTER, R. HAWKE, J. ABRAHAM, and W.H. RULE, Liskeard; S. VESPER, jun., Stonehouse; J. WILLCOCKS, J.G. SPEARE, and W. Dymond, Callington; E. Dingle, Tavistock; Lyne, Stoke Climsland; N. COAD, Southhill; J. STEVENS; Jabez NICOLIS, J. TREHANE, and Peake GARLAND, Linkinhorne; George, Mark Valley; Seccombe, Liskeard; George HAWKS, Callington; Holloway, Crocker, J. PALMER, and Daniel BRENT, Northhill; Retallack, Linkinhorne; Luskey, Lewannick; Gideon Speare, Stockaton Villa; Medland, Looe. The deceased was buried by his own request in an earth grave, and not in the family vault. It is understood that besides the Browda and other estates Mr. Thomas Kittow has left personal property to the amount of about £75,000. Although there is no written evidence to that effect his family entertain no doubt that he attained his hundredth birthday last August. He came of a long-lived family, in whose hands Browda has been for 500 years or more. There is in the dining-room an old piece of carved wood bearing the date 1602 and the initials 'R.K.' The estate descended to Digory Kittow, the eldest son of the Richard Kittow, whose initials, these are, and Digory Kittow was succeeded by his son Thomas, who died in 1844, aged 84 and was in his turn succeeded by his son Thomas, who is now deceased. Now Browda, it is understood, comes to Mr. John Kittow, of Linkinhorne, Mr. Thomas Kittow's grand-nephew. The drawing-room at Browda contains a fine portrait of the late Mr. Kittow, by Opie[1] , painted when Mr. Kittow was in the prime of life, and including a view of South Caradon mine in the background. The Kittows had only the wealth of ordinary yeomen until the rise of mining in the district, and for 40 years Mr. Thomas Kittow was purser of South Caradon. Upon his retirement in 1867 the shareholders presented him with a piece of plate, but he was still more proud of a clock and an address which were given him by the workpeople on the mine. This clock and address still occupy a prominent place over the dining-room mantel-piece at Browda. The deceased was a Liberal in politics, and was well known and widely respected in the neighbourhood. The funeral arrangements were undertaken by Mr. BODY, of Callington, the hearse and coaches being sent from Webb's Hotel, Liskeard.

Cornwall. Valuable Freehold Estate, In the Parish of Trewen, For Sale.

Mr. John Kittow is favoured with instructions to offer for sale by Public Auction, at the White Hart Hotel, Launceston, on Tuesday, the 10th day of May next, at Four o'clock precisely, all that desirable Estate called Gospenheale, comprising 94a 2r 27p, or thereabouts, of excellent Grazing and Dairy Land, with dwelling house and necessary Outbuildings, in the respective occupations of Messrs. Rickards and Perkins and others, as tenants of Mr. John Nanscawen Dawe. The land is naturally of a very fertile description, carries an abudance of excellent grass, and is well adapted both for dairy and grazing purposes. The situation is very sheltered, the fields well supplied with water, and the property, which lies within a ring fence, is distant about five miles from the Great Western and South Western Railway Stations at Launceston, and adjoins the main road to Camelford. It is seldom such a desirable property is offered for competition in the neighbourhood, and capitalists may rely on it as an investment of the soundest character, land of this description being much sought after, and lets readily in the district. The estate may be viewed on application to Mr. J.N. Dawe, Menwinnick, near Launceston; and full particulars and plans, with the conditions of sale, may be obtained from the Auctioneer; or from Messrs. Cowlard, Cowlard, and Grylls, Solicitors, Launceston, Cornwall.

Sale of a Freehold Estate - Mr. Kittow offered for sale by auction, on the 27th ult., at Launceston, the freehold estate known as Whiteleigh, situate in the parish of Week St. Mary, North Cornwall, containing 354 acres of land. There was a good attendance at the sale, over 70 persons being present. The biddings were started by Mr. Thomas Baker, of Egbear, Werrington, at £1,800; and the property was eventually knocked down to Mr. C. H. Peter, for Messrs. Charles Foster and Arthur Coode, of the East Cornwall Bank, for £2,550. The competition was fairly brisk, resting mainly between Messrs. Richard Paynter and the purchasers. The farm has been in the hands of the owners, and the annual value can only be approximately arrived at. It is probably from about £80 to £90.
The farm has, therefore, fetched about £7 per acre, and about 28 years' purchase money. There are several acres of meadow land around the house, the rest being upland, pasture, and moorland; it is a good shooting estate. The attendance at the sale included Messrs. Lukin (of the firm of Clarke and Lukin, solicitors, Chard), Mr. Pyke, Launceston, solicitor for the property; and Messrs. Peter, White, and Stevens.
