About my KITTO files

These trees are provided to family historians without prejudice. I have constructed most of my KITTO family trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases it is estimated as the best fit from available choices. In most of the trees, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in this family. More modern families also need your inputs, because as I can link modern families to each other, and thus it enables a focus on their common ancestry. The memories of one branch may not be complete, but yet may fill in gaps of another branch. Only by a concerted effort can we really define the true lineage. Help me to help you by sharing what you have.

Ken STEWART < kjstew@iinet.net.au >

ABBREVIATIONS USED

Other than the standard abbreviations and Chapman County codes I also use

b. born, bp. baptised, m. married, d. died, bd. buried, cr. cremated

(IGI reg) to designate source of IGI materials with "registers" source codes

(IGI) or (IGI patron) to show IGI materials with another source (not always reliable)

Other sources may be abbreviated, hoping you are able to understand my intention.

"c" before year date to show an estimated year

"cc" before year date to show I have used the spouse's date data as a rough guide

The (Qx 18xx #5c/xxx St Columb) details are the GRO reference numbers for certificates. These are as follows (Quarter, Year, County code, Ref number, County District)

PRIVACY

For the sake of privacy, I do not put the full dates of birth, death or marriage of any known living person. For unknown individuals I allow 100 years from a known data of birth.

Addresses are usually not published for recent census or Internet Locations, unless I had found a different more recent location.

Full dates and addresses are kept in my private files, available to immediate family members for their genealogical studies.

A reminder that this file is in the development stage and there are still quite a few errors. Please let me know of any corrections or additions you can make. Any quoted references to St Catherine’s Indexes are my extractions and would need to be checked before ordering any certificates.

Some years ago I believe you printed a tree of Kittos of Calstock and Callington.

In that tree you stated you couldn't not locate Charles Kitto in the 1851 census.

He is at Pengelley farm Callington under the name Charles Kite age 12.

On his baptismal record his father is given the surname Kite. Howard POMROY

First child of Matthew KITTO and Mary BOX

(1) William Adams KITTOW bp. 9 Dec 1827 Callington, Con, Eng. m. 4 Jul 1848 Altarnun, Con, Eng. (Q3 1848 #9/169 Launceston, IGI) d. 1905 Callington, Con, Eng. Mary COUCH b. 1821 Altarnun, Con, Eng. likely d. 1904 Con, Eng. (Q1 1904 #5c/36 Liskeard) aged 80 years, Biog: wife (29) in 1851, wife (40) in 1861, wife (50) in 1871, wife (58) in 1881, wife (70) in 1891, wife (80) in 1901

NOTES: Parents actually listed as Matthias and Grace Kitto. Matthew had a sister named Grace who was married after this birth. There is no record of a Matthias and Grace getting married. Adams was Mary BOX's mother's maiden name (William Adams). William was also born just after the marriage of Matthew and Mary. From all of this we assume that the "Grace" name was a mistake from the sister and the recorder of the records just got them mixed up. - Patricia KITTO

NOTES: Parents actually listed as Matthias and Grace Kitto. AND in the 1851 census, Matthew and Mary are listed with 20 year old son John who was born in Callington. Since they had been married before 20 years earlier, they must have been married when he was born. Since he was born in Callington then it should have been in the parish register. Since there is no other John Kitto listed as being born in these year, we conclude that this is the "right" John Kitto and that his parents are really Matthew and Mary, not Grace. - Patricia KITTO–

West Britain & Cornish Advertiser – 10 Mar 1848

CALLINGTON -  On Monday last, a labourer named John KITTOW was brought before the Rev. Dr. FLETCHER, and by him committed for stealing some bottles of porter and other articles belonging to Mr. Sampson JASPER, of the Red Lion Inn in that town.

West Britain & Cornish Advertiser – 7 Apr 1848

JOHN KITTOW, 43, was charged with stealing on the 4th of March, at Callington, four bottles of porter, a fagot of wood, and other articles, the property of SAMPSON JASPER.  The prisoner had been in the employ of Mr. Jasper for about twelve months; and on the 4th of March, assisted him in removing from the Royal Oak public house to the Red Lion; and having been to the cellar of the latter house placing some bottles of porter, he was shortly afterwards seen by the prosecutor walking off with four bottles, in the breast and pockets of his coat. In the course of the same evening, the prisoner was seen walking away from a field which prosecutor occupied near the Royal Oak, with a fagot of wood.  The evidence in the case left no doubt of the prisoner's guilt, but h’ received a good character from several witnesses, and was recommended to mercy.  - Guilty - One Month's Hard Labour.’

            CALSTOCK

KITTO’s from Callington & Calstock District

This tree is provided to family historians without prejudice. I have constructed most of my KITTO family trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases it is estimated as the best fit from available choices.  In this tree, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in this family.

ABBREVIATIONS USED

Other than the standard abbreviations and Chapman County codes I also use

(IGI reg) to designate source of IGI materials with "registers" source codes

(IGI) to show IGI materials with another source (not always reliable)

"c" before year date to show an estimated year

"cc" before year date to show I have used the spouse's date data as a rough guide

The (Qx 18xx #5c/xxx Liskeard) details are the GRO reference numbers for certificates
