LEVEL CROSSING SMASH - MOTORMAN'S LEGS INJURED - Melbourne. Tuesday, 21 Jan 1930

At Hampton last night William John Kitto (54), a motorman, had his left leg fractured and the right leg badly lacerated when a motor car driven by J. Evans ran through and smashed the interlocking gates at a level crossing. An electric train struck the wrecked gates. Considerable damage was done to the train, and the woodwork was forced against Kitto's legs. Later Evans informed the police that as he approached the gates they unexpectedly closed against him. He was unable to pull up the car, and it crashed through.

(Barrier Miner (Broken Hill NSW) Tuesday 21 Jan 1930 – TROVE)

(I believe that William John was actually 64 years old)

POLICE: At Clerkenwell. Mary Jane KITTO and Ellen WEST were brought up on the charge of having been concerned together in stealing a gold watch, four gold rings, studs, solitaires, 24 silver spoons, ten china plates, and other goods, value Ł 90. The prisoners were in the service of Mr. Alfred May, an elderly gentleman, at St John's Park, Holloway, the former as housekeeper and the latter as general servant. The prosecutor kept his valuables in a large safe which was kept in a special room, and the keys of which were entrusted to the keeping of the housekeeper. About six weeks ago Kitto represented that she had lost the keys of the safe. Recently however the prosecutor became suspicious and called in a locksmith, who forced open the door of the safe and found that it had been almost emptied of his property deposited in it. The police were communicated with, and the prisoners not being able to give satisfactory answers respecting the keys which were said to have been lost, they were given into custody. On being searched, 44 pawn tickets relating to the jewellery, &c, were found on them, and they were charged with being concerned in stealing the property. Kitto admitted the charge, and West also pleaded guilty. Mr. Barstow considered that the latter prisoner had been acting under the influence of the other woman, and he therefore ordered her to be discharged. Kitto was sentenced to six months hard labour.
