The MARSHALL FAMILY

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This tree is provided to family historians without prejudice. I have constructed most of my family trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases it is estimated as the best fit from available choices.  In this tree, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in this family. More modern families also need your inputs, because as I can link modern families to each other, and thus it enables a focus on their common ancestry. The memories of one branch may not be complete, but yet may fill in gaps of another branch. Only by a concerted effort can we really define the true lineage. Help me to help you by sharing what you have. I have included the contributor's email addresses within the file.

My thanks to you all. Ken STEWART < kjstew@iinet.net.au > 2020.

LINKS

You can move up and down through generations by clicking on the hyperlinks. Use spouses to go down generations and parents to go back to earlier generations. Bold links usually go to different family files

ABBREVIATIONS USED

OPR-KS - the Kilsyth Parish Registers of Scotland usually transcribed by me "KS" from films of the originals

KPR-KS - the Kilsyth Parish Registers of Scotland confirmed by careful second transcripts of the original films of the originals

IGI reg - from parish register films from the International Genealogical Index of the Latter Day Saints. Became SSBB = Sct Select Births). Usually a reliable source. “Family Search” is not necessarily an “IGI reg” source

IGI - from non-recognised sources in the International Genealogical Index of the Latter Day Saints. Not necessarily a reliable source

Place names follow the standard Chapman Codes, eg Stirling = Sti etc.

Person's names are as found in the original records, so expect many spelling variations.

b. = born,          bp. = baptised, m. = married,    d. = died,          bd. = buried.

occ: = occupation / biographical notes.   wit: = witnesses to events.

"c" before year date to show an estimated year

"cc" before year date to show I have used the spouse's date data as a rough guide

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CAMPBELL family is not an original family of Kilsyth. All Campbell references found in the earlier Volume 3 are from outsiders who have married into a Kilsyth family. They do not stay in Kilsyth.

No CAMPBELL births or marriages found to be recorded in Kilsyth Registers Volumes 4 and 5. There may not be any families there yet. I suspect also that the Campbell families were all a little wary about recording the births, deaths and marriages, or maybe they used pseudonyms. They were heavily involved at Culloden in 1746

Later volumes include Campbells drifting in from other parts, and becoming populous.

The Kilsyth Estates 1715 - 1783

After the Jacobite Rising of 1715 the Kilsyth Estates were forfeited from the LIVINGSTONE family, and purchased through the "York Buildings Company" by Daniel CAMPBELL of SHAWFIELD. This Estate was sold in 1783 to Sir Archibald EDMONSTONE for £41,000 and included the lands of East and West Baronnies. The new mansion of Colzium, near the site of the demolished Colzium Castle was the family home for the EDMONSTONES.

The Battle of Falkirk 17th January 1746

To accelerate a junction with the forces at Perth, the prince marched his army from Glasgow on the 4th of January, 1746, in two divisions; one of which, commanded by the Prince, took the road to Kilsyth, where it passed the night. Charles himself took up his quarters in Kilsyth house, then belonging to Mr. Campbell of Shawfield. Mr. Campbell's steward, it is said, was ordered to provide everything necessary for the comfort of the Prince, under a promise of payment, but was told next morning that the bill should be allowed of his master at accounting for the rents of Kilsyth, which was a forfeited estate.

Walter CAMPBELL had died in 1733, so his Kilsyth Estate was probably in the hands of his brother John CAMPBELL of Shawfield (1696) who died in Kilsyth in 22 Jul 1746. The CAMPBELL's sold out in 1783.

A.        Walter Campbell of Skipness (d c1702)

There appears to be some confusion on Walter's wives. BLG1937 identifies his 1st wife as Anne, daughter of Sir James Stuart of Ardvorlich and widow of MacDonald of Sana, but TSP (Bute) suggests that the widow of Macdonald of Sana was the following Anne. HOWEVER, it is possible that the Anne shown as Walter's 3rd wife may be this Anne. THIS IS TO BE REVIEWED IN DUE COURSE.

m1. Anne Stewart (dau of Sir James Stewart, 1st Bart of Ardmaleish and of Kirktoun, Sheriff of Bute)

i.          Angus Campbell of Skipness

BLG1886 does not identify Angus's wife/wives but BLG1937 shows his first wife (marriage 16.09.1682) as Jean, daughter of Sir James Stewart, Sheriff of Bute, which suggests confusion with the Anne Stewart we show as his mother. We leave Angus's first wife unidentified pending further investigation.

Parliamentary Papers

"I end on a note of caution for the minister, which came from a little story that I found in William Ferguson's book, "Scotland: 1689 - Present". In 1725, Shawfield House in Glasgow was severely damaged by a mob. The house was looted and razed, and blood was shed, because Daniel Campbell of Shawfield, who was the MP for the Glasgow burghs, had supported the malt tax on whisky. Perhaps the minister should support the industry now."

Subject: Campbells in Kilsyth

Hi, I have recently discovered that my second great grandfather, Joseph Campbell appears to have been living in Kilsyth at the time of the 1841 Census. Although the census records claim that all the family were born in Scotland, in fact Joseph came from Scotstown, near Monaghan. He was born about 1813 but had moved to Scotland by 1840 and then settled in Sunderland by 1853.

His wife Isabella came from Monkwearmouth, Sunderland (born c1816). Their son George was born in Hartlepool in 1840, and their daughter Isabella was also born in Scotland in 1841.

This information led me to your excellent site and I find that you also have recorded:
CAMPBELL Joseph 1815 hd 25 Labourer Charles Street not locals Kingston#1

CAMPBELL Isabella 1815 25 Charles Street not locals Kingston#1

CAMPBELL Isabella 1839 1 Charles Street not locals Kingston#1

CAMPBELL George 1838 2 Charles Street not locals Kingston#1

I should be grateful if you can give any indication as to why the family would have come to Kilsyth. I note that Joseph is described as a labourer and that recurred in later census reports for Sunderland. Could he be related to the other Campbell's in the area?  I should also be interested to learn more about the Kilsyth area in the period 1813-1840. Any help you can give me would be very gratefully received.

Yours sincerely

Richard Coulson

(1a) Robert Campbell I, and Janet Hendrie, proclaim their marriage intentions, and paid their dues up in Logierait Parish, But they did not follow up with a marriage here on the 10th December 1726. They were married 28 December 1726 in Kilsyth Parish, she the daughter of Mr. Michael Hendry in Shawoud. Their residence was noted after the proclamation as Menstrie, near Alva. Janet was already 2 months with child at this stage. This  information was gained from reading the Logierait Parish records via Mormon church micro-fiche.  Same name combinations happen an awful lot in these small communities, but it’s the “Menstrie” connection and a place called Middletoun Kerse that links three generations together.

Robert Campbell I, was making sure his line was going to be hard to trace, or he was a man on the run with enemies after him? So it must have been rather cold at this time, (Winter) they marry 8 days later in Kilsyth Parish.  We know that Janet Hendrie (Hendry) had a father In Kilsyth, but why Logierait Parish – it would have been a hard trip up there and back in the snow?  Was he from an ancient line of Campbells who all originatied from Logierait – so far have not done the research, but it could be.

Robert Campbell I, his first born son, also named Robert Campbell, was described as his ‘natural son’ and christened 1727 July 23rd in the Logierait Parish records, but underneath it was written that he was born in Menstrie.  The session clerk was unaware that the said Mr. Robert Campbell had married Janet Hendrie (Hendry) in Kilsyth.  They were pretty honest these church people and would be unheard of to falsify records.

Robert Campbell I, had his second child a daughter is christened too at Logierait 1729  September 14th. However he was already dead.  His mother Janet Kidstone, relict of Mr. Thomas Campbell  who died at Craigmill in April 1706 paid on the 4th May 1729, Pound Stering 6 to the Session Of Logie “for the best mortcloth to her two sons, Robert Campbell and John Campbell”.

The assumption is that they had both died by this time. Ref: LOGIE : A Parish History, Chapter XIX – Middleton Kerse of Menstrie, Page 174. The chapter goes on about this estate and several owners.  Neither her (Janet Kidstone) or her sons ever live here, but she leaves a will to Robert Campbell II  (christened 1727 July 23rd).

Before her death in 1732 she purchased this estate (Middletoun Kerse Of Menstrie) prior to 1725 for Scots Merks 700. Young Robert Campbell II inherits this. There is also a Will reference to Robert Campbell II and Janet Kidstone = Middletoun Kerse in the Dunblane Register Of Wills (Google Internet Books).

Robert Campbell I’s widow Janet Hendrie (Hendry) re-married 1733 January 12th to Mr. James Alexander in Dunblane.  He makes his testament of their marriage at Logierait Parish (not Logie Parish).  Their residence from 1733 onwards was written in as Middletoune Garse of Menstrie. At some later date they lived at the steps of Menstrie

Janet Hendrie (Hendry) failed to give Mr. James Alexander a son, they had five daughters from this marriage.

Our Robert Campbell II appears to become a ‘heritor’ of the Parish Of Logie and lives at the estate of Middletoun Kerse for most of his life. He marries Janet Guild and also proclaims his marriage intentions 1773 February 27th in Logierait Parish like his father before him. He married Janet Guild in Alva Parish 1773 March 19th. Their residence was Middletoune Garse and from 1786 Janet Guild lives at Alloa.

The estate at Middletoun Kerse appeared to have debt problems and was sold by his trustees to Mr. James Gibb, a merchant in Stirling in 1785. Janet Guild the widow of Robert Campbell II of Middletoun Kerse was christened in 1752 July 4th at Logierait Parish and was 25 years younger than her husband, her father was Mr. James Guild of Myreton Hills near Alva. He feued land at Balquharn, Myreton and the Kirklands Of Tullibody and was a heritor of Logie Parish. His branch of the family were the founders of Dolls Distillery whose name was changed to the Glenochil Distillery in MenstrieMiddletoun Kerse Of Menstrie was very close to this distillery. It appears that Robert Campbell II of Middletoun Kerse was a good friend of her father Mr. James Guild, who also was a heritor of the Parish of Logie. They are witness to quite a few baptisms and funerals at Logie Parish and their names are also linked in the Session Books of that Parish.  from Lindah Campbell, Inglewood, New Zealand.
