comb3.docx -     The English Combley family                           14 Feb 2025

==================================================================

This file was put together jointly by Ken F STEWART < kjstew@iinet.net.au > with input from many others

This tree is provided to family historians without prejudice. I have constructed most of my family trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases, it is estimated as the best fit from available choices. In this tree, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in this family. More modern families also need your inputs, because as I can link modern families to each other, and thus it enables a focus on their common ancestry. The memories of one branch may not be complete but yet may fill in gaps of another branch. Only by a concerted effort can we really define the true lineage. Help me to help you by sharing what you have. Many additional details have been provided by other researchers and where possible I have included the contributor's email addresses within the file next to their families, however there are countless others also involved. I am willing to also add you in to your COMBLEY family. My thanks to you all.  Ken STEWART < kjstew@iinet.net.au > 2020

ABBREVIATIONS USED

Other than the standard abbreviations and Chapman County codes I also use

(OPR) to show I extracted the data myself from the parish registers on microfilm, or have been given the full details.

(IGI reg) to designate source of IGI materials with "registers" source codes

(IGI) to show IGI materials with another source (not always reliable)

"c" before year date to show an estimated year

"cc" before year date to show I have used the spouse's date data as a rough guide

I do not show the full dates of living persons. These kept are in my personal family files.

Reginald Desmond HAMES b. 26 Apr 1928 WA. d. 17 Jul 2007 Boddington, WA. cr. Karrakatta, WA. aged 79 years.

Reginald’s story from Kerren

Dad did not finish high-school, but he desperately wanted a farm, and decided that the only way he could ever afford one was to become a doctor.  So up until I was 6, we spent every dry season in the Kimberley, living in tents, as he earned good money as a stockman. Then in the wet season he worked for Grandad as a butcher.  Once I started school, in 1956, we moved to Perth and he did his high-school exams, and started studying medicine at WA Uni. Every holiday we went back up North to earn more money.  The final year of medicine is live-in at the emergency department of Royal Perth.  He never came home again.

Ernest Jackson’s story from Kerren

He was old enough to be called up for WW1 And young enough to be called up for WW2. After WW1 he was given a block of land which he cleared with an axe. He went in for breeding draught horses … and someone invented the tractor.  He tried pigs, and there was an outbreak of foot-and-mouth, and in those days the government did not pay compensation, they just shot all your animals and burned the carcases.  So he had a go at sheep ... and the bottom dropped out of the wool market, and he couldn’t give his sheep away.  So … he tried growing wheat … just in time for a 3-year drought.  He walked off the farm in 1929 with a wife, the clothes he stood up in, and 6 kids … just in time for the great depression.  He eventually became a carpenter, until called up for WW2.  He died of shell-shock in 1956

Dumpy’s story from Kerren

Dumpy Jones was a legend – he made Crocod ile Dundee look like a boastful teenager.  The world lost a Great Man when he died.  To give you just one example – the tourist bureau offered a lot of money for a large crocodile skin and skeleton with NO bullet holes in the top … so he took a boat tinny out, dragged some bait, jumped into the water with a knife, and used it to kill the biggest of the crocs (knife through the jugular), then swam back to shore, past all the other crocs, dragging the dead croc behind him.
